  BACKGROUND & THEME

In its 57th meeting in December 2002, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, 2005- 2014,  (DESD) 'emphasizing that education is an indispensable element for achieving sustainable development'.

“Education for sustainable tomorrow is formidable challenge. It places education at the heart of the quest to solve the problem threatening our future. Education in all its forms and at all levels is seen not only as an end in itself but also as one of the most powerful instrument for bringing about the changes required to achieve sustainable development”
Former Director-General, UNESCO

The challenge of sustainable tomorrow lay a profound responsibility on business schools to disseminate knowledge to business professional for today and tomorrow. Management education has contributed immensely for the success and growth of institutions, corporate and industries for more than a century. But the global dynamics of business is changing. New challenges and opportunities are thrown open in terms of values, equity, accessibility, affordability, inclusion, quality, intellectual capital, restoration of resources, conservation, eco system and above all sustainability. This is leading us to revisit and realign the management education.

Following the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (UNPRME), business programmes should become thought and action leaders on these issues. The task of transforming management education to contribute effectively to the challenge of moving to global sustainability is upon us. Management Education for Global Sustainability provides a diverse and extensive set of perspectives on how management education can be transformed to be a significant part of the solution to the sustainability problem that business and other sectors of our world must grapple with.

The spectrum of current integration of managing for sustainability into business school curricula and priorities needs to be re looked. There is need to understand transformation of management education in the context of sustainable development from interdisciplinary and value based approach. There is also need to review the management education system to integrate sustainable development into the educational system so that future generations can be nurtured and imbued with the need to appreciation, embrace ecological protection, conservation of resources as part of ethics, culture, norms and behavior.

The sense of deeper purpose vibrancy and developing authentic relationships in management education for global sustainability is call for the day.

A large number of conferences/seminars are organized by international bodies like UNESCO, UN-DESD, on this issue.  AIMA the apex body of management education too wants to raise some of the issues requiring urgent debate, discussion and action plan from Indian perspective.  The forthcoming National Research Conference of AIMA on “Transforming Management Education for Sustainable Tomorrow” is aimed in this direction.
